Devonport Aikido...
developing confidence, discipline and self-mastery through the
Art of Peace.
I began my Aikido journey more than 30 years ago and I've been lucky to have trained all over the world, with some of the worlds best Aikido practitioners.
As a father, I always wanted my daughter to develop the confidence and discipline and technical self-defence skills that come from learning Aikido, so we opened our own dojo here in Devonport - Devonport Aikido!
10 years on we have taken hundreds of children on their martial arts journey and have built a strong cohort of adult students.
Aikido is the perfect tonic for executive stress and for our children in our increasingly complex modern world.
Our Aikido is rooted in the Ueshiba family lineage - technically strong, and both powerful and graceful.
We look forward to the next 10 years of sharing this wonderful art and its many benefits, with the children and adults from the Devonport and North Shore communities.
See you on the mat…

Getting Started - this is the easy part!
Simply bring an open mind to our Devonport Aikido Dojo. We will be there to welcome you on a Monday or Wednesday evening about 15 minutes before the start of class.
See our Training Schedule below.
Age Groups
In the dojo, the age for Juniors is from 7 years of age. We have found that many students under seven, find the training in aikido challenging. We understand that every child is different in their physical and emotional development, so bring your child along to see if they can manage the training environment.
Attire
We train in clean, bare feet. It is best to wear loose training gear; sweat pants and a long sleeve top (a Rugby shirt is fine). Be prepared to train without your jewellery: earrings, watches, rings and necklaces (This is for safety and comfort). If you already have a dogi (training uniform), please feel free to wear it.
Classes
Classes are one hour in length. We will introduce you to our dojo etiquette, and get class underway. You will get to practice the techniques that you are shown with a partner.
Opening Hours
Our dojo is open for training during the four regular 10 week school terms and operates in alignment with the NZ High School calendar. We do not open on public holidays.
